Toyota, which has said it wants to sell an “affordable” hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle by 2015, has further committed to launching a zero-emission fuel-cell sedan and will likely begin selling the cars in the US next year, according to media reports.
The automaker, which has put more than 5 million hybrid vehicles on the road worldwide since 1997, will showcase the fuel-cell car at the Tokyo Motor Show in November, Bloomberg says.
Toyota first unveiled the fuel-cell vehicle concept at Tokyo in 2011. The company’s fuel cell hybrid vehicle-advanced (FCHV-adv), part of a fleet of 100 in a nationwide demonstration program, is on-site at Colorado’s Aspen Ideas Festival, which ends today. In addition to exhibiting the FCHV-adv (pictured) at the festival, Toyota’s also leading a “Future of Mobility Conversation” that the company says will help advance the national conversation around advanced technologies such as hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.
Toyota’s hydrogen-powered sedan could be available in US dealerships in 2014 at a price comparable to a mid-size BMW or Tesla Model S, Bloomberg reports. The car company sees potential to top its Prius success with the fuel-cell vehicle , according to the Detroit News.
