Does anyone have any experience of building a green house , or one that is very energy efficient ?
Anyone know if any of the building companies have this sort of thing?

There is a couple featured in the back page of the latest Good magazine who do sustainable architecture... I think they are in Nelson (sorry I don't have my copy of the mag with me at the moment).
Tony Watson in Auckland runs workshops in principles of sustainable architecture. There is alos a company in Auckland called ebode who might be worth a visit.
What part of the country are you in, Tim?

Shop carefully! The award winning sustainable house of the year (or was that builder of the year), is made with very expensive materials, including steel framing (how is that sustainable?) and uses many imported products, fittings etc. Must say it looks good though. Just be aware, there is sustainable and there is sustainable......

Agreed, Nick. I think one of the most important things is to first define what sustainable means to you. Lots of library books, online research & discussion with all sorts of people really helps!
Once you're clear what you want, you can measure potential architects and builders against your own criteria to find out if they are a good match for your expectations.
We had concept drawings done for a sustainable house some years ago (although we never ended up building it). We specified local materials (timber and clay), local contractors, passive solar elements, energy efficiency, low maintenance, modular (so it could grow with our needs), accessibility (for elderly and disabled), non-toxic finishes and a small physical footprint on the land.
We planned to install solar panels for water heating, composting toilets, a rainwater collection system and grey water re-use.
The architect we used (Megan Rule) did a wonderful job of listening to us and incorporating our ideas, as well as adding ideas of her own. The resulting plan was an excellent match for our needs and our chosen site - we were very impressed!

Hi Tim,
The company I'm employed by has a very strong commitment to and experience in sustainable design & energy efficient design. We'd be very happy to discuss your project with you, even if we are not the right 'fit' for you. My phone number is 04 917 1278 (we are in Wellington, but also have an office in Chch) if you wish to call.
Kind regards & good luck,
Ewan MacMaster

Hi Tim, I met a couple of architects over the weekend who really impressed me. They specialise in environmental architecture and did their degrees in Germany but have been operating in NZ (Northland) for years. We talked for quite a while about passive solar energy and it occurred to me that you might want to know about them. Schultze Poursoltan Architects - http://www.schulze-poursoltan.co.nz/.

If you haven't already done so, check out www.ecobob.co.nz, there is a lot of info there on eco friendly houses.

Might I also add into the mix several other names including Arhaus (www.arhaus.co.nz), and architects Graeme North (earth building) and Johann Bernhardt (general "green" building).
