About This Project

This is a TelstraClear project

Our aim: With our customers, employees and operations spanning the country, TelstraClear is truly a part of community life. Connecting people and communities in a safe and protected way is what we are about, and enabling the establishment of Crimestoppers in New Zealand plays a big part in helping the NZ Police and other law enforcement agencies to help create safer communities and better business environments.

Our community partner: Crimestoppers.

Our actions: Crimestoppers are an independent charity established in 2009 to empower Kiwis to do something about crime in their community, by offering an anonymous tollfree number (0800 555 111) for individuals to provide information about crime, without endangering themselves.

In 2009 TelstraClear assisted Crimestoppers in the solution design, establishment and launch of the anonymous tollfree crime reporting service, by providing the service solution, and all calls, free-of-charge. The calls are routed via the UK Crimestoppers contact centre and anonymous information is then provided back to the NZ Police via the Crime Reporting Line (CRL).

TelstraClear CEO Allan Freeth is a Trustee of Crimestoppers. We also launched a television commercial with TelstraClear’s icon TC, and Bill, promoting Crimestoppers services.

In our ongoing support of Crimestoppers, where possible we connect our business community and networks with the work they do, using for example the new anonymous reporting line for organisations, called Integrity Plus.

Our footprint: On the one year anniversary of establishment in October 2010, Crimestoppers reported calls exceeding 7,200 with some 2,700 being actionable. The conversion rate indicates that for every 10 items of information received by NZ Police, one arrest is made.

We also happily host the office of Crimestoppers CEO Lou Gardiner within our premises on Wellington’s Lambton Quay.

Our next steps: Currently working on a channel for children and youth to engage with Crimestoppers.
